Beginner Level 1 Salsa Class

This is the now very popular 6 WEEK SALSA CRASH COURSE starting from the absolute beginning.

WHEN: BEGINS SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 12

This is a DROP-IN CLASS but there is a SYLLABUS.

So, you can look at the syllabus and decide when you want to drop-in.

However, for those of you who are new to salsa, I strongly recommend that you complete the entire course.
It will give you an excellent base to be able to go out and dance socially without being intimidated.

We’ll learn essential things to salsa dancing such as TIMING, LEAD & FOLLOW TECHNIQUES, THE MOST POPULAR MOVES ON THE DANCE FLOOR.

Even if you are not brand new to salsa, this class is a good refresher and it will help you become a better dancer.

LADIES, those of you who want to begin learning how to lead, this is your chance.

Here are the syllabus:

WEEK 1 – Learn how to find the first beat at any given moment in the music. Learn the basic step. Learn proper holding positions. Learn to maintain the rhythm of the music while executing the basic step with and without a partner. Learn the basic concept of resistance.

WEEK 2 – Review week 1. Learn how to maintain the rhythm of the music while leading/ following your partner in a complete circle (360). Learn the basic right turn. Learn to lead/follow the right hand turn. Combine leading/ following your partner into 360 and leading/ following a right hand turn.

WEEK 3 – Review week 2. Learn the cross body lead (CBL): regular and outside CBL. Learn to execute the cross body lead in open and closed positions. Combine Leading/ following your partner into 360, right hand turn and cross body lead in various sequences.

WEEK 4 – Review week 3. Learn the basic left turn. Combine leading/ following your partner into 360, left turn and cross body lead in various sequences.

WEEK 5 – Review week 4. Learn to lead your partner into both left and right hand turns from a cross body lead. New simple turns patterns that can be combined.

WEEK 6 – Review week 5. Learn new simple turns patterns that can be combined.

Beginner-Intermediate Salsa Class

THE NEW SERIES BEGINS ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 6. SEE SYLLABUS BELOW TO DETERMINE YOUR LEVEL AND YOU CAN JOIN ANY WEEK. DROP-INS ARE WELCOME ANY TIME. NO PARTNER REQUIRED! Dress comfortable, sneakers are not recommended. Wear shoes that slide on wood floor, small heel is preferred for ladies.

HOW TO REGISTER: You may pay for this class at the studio on the day you choose to attend the class. No online preregistration is available for this class. CLASS DETAILS: This class begins on Monday, September 13, 2010 at 8:30pm to 9:30pm at DC Dance Collective located at: 4908 Wisconsin Ave, NW, Washington, DC.

CLASS DESCRIPTION: This class runs for 12 weeks and meets for an hour every Monday. No partner is required. Drop-ins are welcome! See the syllabus below and choose what week to come to class.

The first 6 weeks are for those who are brand new to salsa and want to learn and master the very basics. The material covered during that first half of the class is the core of salsa dancing. If you know these moves  and partnering techniques well, you are ready to go to the next level, which is the second half of the class (weeks 7-12).

SYLLABUS:

WEEK 8 – Review week 7. Drop Catch. Learn this new move and combine it with the moves you learned so far in fun patterns

WEEK 9 – Review week 8. Shoulder Check; single and double hand lead. This is a very popular and often used move on the dance floor. It’s a MUST KNOW!

WEEK 10 – Review week 9. Crucifix. It’s as interesting and cool looking as it sounds. By now you have a significant salsa vocabulary built and we’ll be having fun with fun partnering patterns

WEEK 11 – Review week 10. It’s time to practice. We’ll use this class to practice all moves we know in different intermediate combos. We’ll also be adding men and ladies styling to spice up your salsa

WEEK 12 – Spinning and Styling. Finish this class with the icing of your salsa dancing. Make it look really good by learning some cool styling tips and double spins techniques.

We’ll also learn some merengue, bachata, and cha cha. In the end you’ll be ready for the dance floor!
Field trips to salsa clubs are a must during this class so you’ll be going out dancing with Silvia.

This is a salsa class for those who have some salsa under their belt or have taken Silvia’s 6-week Beginner Salsa Crash Course and want to continue learning for fun moves, salsa lead-follow techniques, styling and footwork.

This class is a DROP-IN CLASS but there is a SYLLABUS (see below).
